U-2 and Patti Smith At Madison Square Garden

Busybusybusy at the office, but had some fun after work. Our pal Rob got three of us tickets to the U-2 Concert at Madison Square Garden.

Got there just before Patti Smith sang her signature song " Because the Night ". Then Rock N Roll Nigger and some rapidfire punky stuff. Face contorted like a fist, she prowled the stage, her anger barely under control.

U-2's not that angry. They're a cool, high-tech bunch from Dublin. They're Irish, but you never hear a recognizably Irish sound in their music. No uileann pipes, no fiddles, none of that. It's an American sound, by way of the garage.

They're a savvy big stadium band, and the noise level indicated that the amplifiers were in excellent working order.

There was a circular stage protruding into a pit of fans. It was framed by lights that changed colors, as did the stage background, and lamps hanging from the ceiling.

U-2's a good band, but I won't say that they are a great band. Lets face it, their new music is too goddamned slow and a lot of it sounds the same. And I can't get excited about " Vertigo ", though it is ok, and it did sell a few IPODs.

But " Sunday Bloody Sunday " was and is an important and great song. " Pride in the Name of Love " "With Or Without You " and " Where the Streets Have No Name " are very good.

They performed " Miss Sarajevo " , with Bono singing some lines in Italian. In the studio version the Italian lines were sung by Pavorotti.

Is there a time for keeping your distance?
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down?
For getting on with your day
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick?
A time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping?
To find the right dress to wear
Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown
Is there a time to run for cover?
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colors?
Different names you find it hard to spell
Is there a time for first communion?
A time for East 17
Is there a time to turn to Mecca?
Is there a time to be a beauty queen?
Here she comes
Beauty plays the clown
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown
Dici che il fiume
Trova la via al mare
E come il fiume
Giungerai a me
Oltre I confini
E le terre assetate
Dici che come fiume
Come fiume.
L'amore giunger
L'amore.
E non so pi pregare
E nell'amore non so pi sperare
E quell'amore non so pi
aspettare
It's said that a river
Finds the way to the sea
And like the river
You shall come to me
Beyond the borders
And the thirsty lands
You say that as a river
Like a river.
Love shall come
Love.
And I'm not able to pray
Anymore
And I cannot hope in love
Anymore
And I cannot wait for love
Anymore
Is there a time for tying ribbons?
A time for Christmas trees
Is there a time for laying tables?
And the night is set to freeze

Much of U2's work is political, but not in an agitprop, enraged, spit in your face Patti Smith way. They love America, and America loves them back.

ill answer your responce here as im banned he could have just said so and i would have agreed to it as now emma is shut out as well which is typical justice principles he supports,
you have misinterputed the oo yes there doctrine is against the papel church who have there own biggoted approch .they get on well in other parts of ireland but because of tensions in the north there are conflicts but to put them in with hezballoh and the mafia is just wrong on your part have you ever went to a oo meeting and hear what they talk about or is it just the hype you hear and go on other people's band wagons

What I'd know of the Orange Order comes from reading of history, observing news broadcasts, reading the news, etc etc.

Also speaking from people in the North who witnessed the throwing of pennies at the Catholics on July 12 etc.

Under the right circumstances, I would want to see what happens at an OO meeting. Not sure that they'd roll out the red carpet.

If the Orange Order gave up its charitable works, it would still be the Orange Order. But if it gave up its bigotry, there would lose its reason for existence.

No, they don't do suicide bombs like Hezbollah or whack people like the Mafia. And I am sure that there are individuals in it who are decent as persons.

But the organization itself, it does not live to honor and support " Unionist culture " or whatever. It exists to stir the pot, to keep the two communities apart, to march and bang angry drums, to indimidate.

I'm sorry that the dispute between you and UI has gotten to this point, and would like to think it will go away. I'll leave it at that, as those who intervene further risk getting both angry at him.

You and Emma and UI are very welcome here.

im sure you would be welcome at a oo meeting ?the oo is nt about unionist culture its about being protestant and defending the faith, i dont know about the pennys as when i was growing up our catholic neighbours used to stand with us and watch the bands back then they played many tunes that were about the victiories and the sash, but these days the music has changed and i can see why they get frustated every year a different march is getting re routed . but out of 75 000 members the whiterock members did behave wrong and hopefully they will change next year.
as for ui well as i said i dont want bad karma so will leave it at that just dont apprecite being called a gob shite and also will leave it at that.
one question how is gramah the aussie with the jets going

about the oo meeting the last time i attented i was 9 or 10 and i think you are sworn to sercery could be wrong on that but you would be able to go to the church services i rem there were a few'

Hi Phantom,

First off I'd like to say that it's a shame william has taken this over to your blog on a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with the issue.

As regards to william, I banned him from United Irelander for a week for threatening me. It is true that I called him a "gobshite" though this was after he had repeatedly called me a fool.

However I feel it's one thing to engage in petty name calling but quite another to then go ahead and threaten physical abuse. I don't care for that kind of thing.

It's worth pointing out that had another user threatened me they would have been banned indefinitely but since william has visited my site for a while I decided to regard it as a comment said in the heat of the momemnt which is why I'm only banning him for a week. I think that's fair. However if I am threatened again the ban will be made permanent.

Back on topic, I do like U2 though alot of my friends do not. Did you catch them on the Conan O'Brien show?

UI

No I didn't. Conan is on pretty later here.

William

Not sure who that guy is. I'm not such an ( American ) football fan.

no worries ,i only replied to your oo thread and if i have crossed over and offended you phamton i just wanted to respond to your comment on the oo.as for u2 there music is good even though its geared for the americian market ,it was a heat of the moment as a gob shite is quite the insult where as my orginal was more fool you for not looking into paisley before stating a fact ,again phamton i appoglise for bringing my remarks about the oo here but only way could answer you enjoy thanks giving

william,

I don't like the fact that you impersonated Jo on my site. I know where my visitors come from don't forget.

Try a stunt like that again and the ban will be made permanent. There's no need for dirty tactics like impersonating others. Besides your spelling gives it away.

Enjoy Thanksgiving Phantom. It's not a holiday here but I hope you have a good time all the same.

what when did i try and say i was someone else now you are getting pariniod being banned as you know is you isp no and how could or why would i change it which one did i supposedly write?

Stewart McAfee and Jo were having a conversation today on United Irelander when suddenly 'Jo' posted a comment that contained several spelling mistakes. This intrigued me as she doesn't usually make such mistakes so I decided to check the ISP address of this 'Jo' and believe it or not but it was a very different ISP address from the one she has usually had! Isn't that just amazing?

Now I asked myself two questions:

1. Who do I know who has noticeably bad spelling?

2. Who do I know who would have reason to take on another's identity?

Guess what conclusion I came to?

I'm no fool william (despite what you may think) and I would appreciate it if you would respect your ban rather than attempt to circumvent it.

That is all I will say on the matter as I don't like to clog up another person's blog with this kind of thing.

My apologies, phantom.

well we have moved on again i never would be someone who use's you site id be anon or make up a name and i dont want to get around your ban so dont flatter yourself ill still read you and have a laugh or comment on my own site but at least phamton will get a good laugh out of this he makes a good referee again check the isp and my isp and you will see it was nt me no reason to i look foward to bantering again after a week it is wed it ends what time?
